Online Anonymity & Privacy Check

This tool inspects your browser for common privacy and anonymity indicators that websites and advertisers use to track, profile, and identify you. Understanding these vectors is the first step to improving your online privacy.

Checked Privacy Indicators

  • JavaScript β€” Enabled in virtually all browsers by default. Disabling it significantly degrades web usability but dramatically improves privacy. Extensions like uMatrix or NoScript can selectively block scripts.
  • Cookies β€” Small data files stored by websites. First-party cookies are generally necessary for login sessions. Third-party cookies are primarily used for cross-site tracking and are being phased out by major browsers.
  • Do Not Track (DNT) β€” An HTTP header requesting that websites not track the user. Unfortunately, most websites ignore this signal as compliance is voluntary and not legally mandated in most jurisdictions.
  • Timezone β€” Your local timezone can narrow down your geographic location even when your IP is masked by a VPN. A mismatch between VPN location and timezone is a common de-anonymization signal.
  • Screen Resolution β€” A fingerprinting vector. Combined with other signals, unique screen sizes can help identify users across sessions.
  • WebRTC IP Leak β€” WebRTC (used for video calls) can reveal your real IP address even when using a VPN, because it creates direct peer-to-peer connections that bypass proxy settings. Can be disabled via browser settings or extensions.
  • Canvas Fingerprinting β€” Websites can draw invisible graphics on an HTML5 canvas and read back the pixel data. Subtle differences in GPU rendering create a unique identifier per device.

How to Improve Your Privacy

  • Use a privacy-respecting browser (Firefox, Brave, or Safari with ITP)
  • Install uBlock Origin to block trackers and ads
  • Use a trustworthy, no-log VPN service
  • Disable WebRTC in your browser or via an extension
  • Consider using the Tor Browser for maximum anonymity
  • Regularly clear cookies or use browser containers
